Bestevennene Jo og Raissa vokser opp på Filippinene på 90-tallet. Når en av dem brått må flytte, frykter de at vennskapet deres vil endres for alltid. På en av deres siste kvelder sammen, blir de to jentene transportert gjennom en mystisk portal til den magiske øya Nakali. Her møter de en verden inspirert av filippinsk mytologi - befolket av skapninger, ånder og monstre de aldri har sett maken til. Mens de leter etter veien hjem, oppdager de en farlig hemmelighet ved øya: jo lengre man oppholder seg der, jo mer glemmer man. Målet blir dermed samtidig en kamp for å bevare minnene og båndet som har knyttet dem sammen hele livet, før det er for sent.
