We could be heroes

Azzidine og Youssef er lidenskapelig opptatt av kulestøt. Mens Azzedine er regjerende verdensmester, er barndomsvennen hans Youssef ganske fersk i gamet. Målet deres er å komme til de olympiske lekene i Rio. Problemet er at de konkurrerer på den paralympiske siden, og kårene for funksjonsutfordrede atleter i Marokko er, mildt sagt, nettopp utfordrende. Uten hverken et profesjonelt støtteapparat, treningsarenaer eller finansiering virker veien mot seierspallen håpløst lang. Men de marokkanske vennene er vant til å kjempe en hard kamp mot diskriminering, og gjøre seg synlige i et samfunn som har en lang vei å gå før det havner på pallen for inkludering av alle mennesker. Regissør Hind Bensari har laget en hjertevarm dokumentar om talent, kameraderi, diskriminering og pågangsmot. En viktig film som berører, og forhåpentligvis opprører tilskueren. Hind Bensari er født i Casablanca og oppvokst i London, men sa opp jobben og flyttet tilbake til Marokko for å produsere sin første dokumentar, 475: Break the Silence. Filmen fikk hederlig omtale i New York Times, og har siden blitt et internett-fenomen. We Could Be Heroes vant pris for beste internasjonale dokumentar på Hot Docs i Toronto i fjor. ----- Azzidine and Youssef are passionate about shot put. While Azzedine is the current world champion, his childhood friend Youssef is quite new in the game. Their goal is the Olympic Games in Rio. The problem is that they are competing on the Paralympic side, and the situation for disabled athletes in Morocco are, to put it mildly, challenging. Without either a professional support team, training facilities, or sufficient finances, the path towards the podium seems hopelessly long. But the Moroccan friends are used to fighting a fierce fight against discrimination and visibility in a society that has a long way to go towards ending up on the podium for inclusion of disabled people. Director Hind Bensari has made a heart-warming documentary about talent, camaraderie, discrimination and determination. An important film that is both touching and upsetting when we learn about the unfair treatment of the courageous athletes. Hind Bensari is born in Casablanca and grew up in London. She returned to Morocco after quitting her job in the UK, to produce her first documentary 475: Break the Silence.
