“A spellbinding production … Anthony Roth Costanzo, who sang the title role … truly owns it … Gleaming high notes and melting sound … The rich-voiced mezzo-soprano J’Nai Bridges [makes] an auspicious Met debut [as Nefertiti] … Conductor Karen Kamensek, making her Met debut, conveyed the ripple, flow, and quiet urgency of the music.”

“Totally engrossing ... McDermott’s captivating, thoughtful production … makes the music visual … The most unusual and ingenious scenic element is the use of 12 jugglers, choreographed by Sean Gandini, whose rhythmic, stunningly synchronized ball tossing makes Mr. Glass’s flowing, buoyant score visible… The opera makes a deep emotional connection. Much of that is due to the mesmerizing performance of Costanzo in the title role … Long live the king.”
